Complete guide to Rally9 Pickleball League rules, match formats, and tournament regulations

1. Match Format

Best of 3 Games

All matches in Rally9 Pickleball League are played as best of 3 games. The first player/team to win 2 games wins the match.

  • Each game is played to 11 points
  • Must win by 2 points (e.g., 11-9, 12-10, 15-13)
  • No time limits per game
  • Matches continue until one player wins 2 games

2. Scoring System

Game Scoring

Standard Scoring

  • Players/teams can only score points on their serve
  • Games are played to 11 points
  • Must win by 2 points minimum
  • Games continue until the 2-point margin is achieved
  • No maximum score limit

Match Scoring

  • Best of 3 games format
  • First to 2 games wins
  • Matches can be 2-0 or 2-1
  • All games must be completed, or a forfeit will be recorded

League Standings

League standings are based on division rankings, with the following hierarchy:

  1. 1st place players from each division (ranked by points)
  2. 2nd place players from each division (ranked by points)
  3. 3rd place players from each division (ranked by points)
  4. All other players (ranked by points, then W/L record, then division position)

Points System

Top 3 divisional players are ranked by points. For players below the top 3, ranking is determined by points first, then W/L record, then division position. Points are awarded as follows:

  • Wins: 20 points for a 2-0 win, 17 points for a 2-1 win
  • Losses: Points won divided by 2, capped at 12 points maximum

3. Game Rules

Standard Pickleball Rules

All games follow official USAPA (USA Pickleball Association) tournament rules with the following modifications:

Serving Rules

  • Underhand serve below waist level
  • Serve diagonally across court
  • Server continues serving until the point is lost
  • Both players serve in doubles play

Court & Equipment

  • 20' x 44' court dimensions
  • 34" net height at center
  • USAPA approved paddles only
  • USAPA approved balls only
  • Non-marking court shoes required

The Kitchen

  • No volleying in the kitchen
  • Must let ball bounce first
  • Momentum rule applies
  • Both feet must be outside zone to volley

Scoring & Play

  • Only serving team can score
  • Ball must clear net and land in bounds
  • Two-bounce rule applies
  • No coaching during play
  • Ball is in play if it hits any line

  • Service out of turn

4. Line Calls & Officiating

Players Make Their Own Line Calls

In Rally9 Pickleball League, players are responsible for making their own line calls. This is a fundamental principle that promotes sportsmanship and fair play.

Line Call Principles

  • Honor System: Always make honest calls
  • Benefit of Doubt: When in doubt, call it IN
  • Clear Vision: Only call what you clearly see
  • Immediate Calls: Make calls promptly
  • Respect Opponent: Accept opponent's calls

Line Call Guidelines

  • Ball touching any part of line is IN
  • Ball must be completely out to be called OUT
  • If you cannot clearly see, call it IN
  • Never question opponent's calls
  • Focus on your side of the court

Dispute Resolution

  • Replay the point if both players agree
  • If disagreement persists, call it IN
  • If both players forget the score, return to the last agreed upon score
  • Maintain respectful communication
  • Report persistent issues to league admin

Sportsmanship

  • Always be honest with line calls
  • Congratulate opponent on good shots
  • Maintain positive attitude
  • Respect the game and opponents

5. League Rules

Eligibility

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Complete player registration
  • Pay league registration fees
  • Agree to league rules and code of conduct
  • Maintain active account status

League Structure

  • Skill-based divisions (2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0+)
  • Regular season matches
  • Playoff tournaments
  • Season awards and recognition
  • Flexible scheduling system

Match Requirements

6. Scheduling & Attendance

Match Scheduling

  • Players coordinate their own match times
  • Each player should select at least 3 distinct dates/times that they are available to play
  • 24-hour advance notice recommended
  • Both players must agree on time/location

Attendance Policy

  • 24-hour cancellation notice required
  • No-shows result in forfeit
  • Excessive cancellations may result in a loss
  • If no match time can be agreed on by the end of the scheduling period, the player who was available for more times will take the win

Facility Requirements

  • Standard pickleball court dimensions
  • Proper net height is ideal, tennis net height is acceptable
  • Safe playing surface
  • Appropriate lighting for evening play
  • Access to restrooms if needed

Score Reporting

  • Report scores in a timely manner
  • Confirm final scores with opponent prior to leaving the court
  • Use league platform for reporting
  • Late reporting may affect league standings

7. Player Conduct

Expected Behavior

  • Treat all players with respect and courtesy
  • Maintain positive attitude regardless of match outcome
  • Make honest line calls and accept opponent's calls
  • Follow all league rules and regulations
  • Support fellow players and league community
  • Represent the league positively in all interactions

Prohibited Behavior

  • Verbal abuse or harassment
  • Physical aggression or threats
  • Intentionally poor line calls
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct
  • Disrespecting facilities or equipment
  • Excessive profanity or inappropriate language
  • Discrimination of any kind
  • Cheating or rule violations
  • Disrupting other matches
  • Refusing to follow league policies

Penalties for Misconduct

8. Disputes & Appeals

Dispute Resolution Process

Players should first try to resolve disputes directly through respectful communication.
